Boiling water does not belong in a hot water bottle

When I started looking into KOALAA, I observed how others fill their hot water bottles. In videos, in comments, with acquaintances. The picture was almost always the same: kettle on, boiling water in, lid on. This is not how it's stated in any instructions, and there are good reasons for it.

Boiling water does not belong in it

Boiling water is almost 100 degrees Celsius. The material of a hot water bottle cannot withstand this permanently: it becomes softer, ages faster, and easily splashes when filling. Burns almost always occur during filling, not when carrying.

Use hot water from the tap or let boiled water sit for a few minutes. It feels less dramatic but retains heat just as long, because it's not the peak temperature that counts, but the amount of water.

Two-thirds, not full to the brim

Fill your hot water bottle to a maximum of two-thirds. Then, carefully press out the remaining air before screwing on the cap. A hot water bottle filled to the brim is taut, uncomfortable, and no longer conforms to the body. At two-thirds, it remains soft and adaptable.

With the belt, you notice the difference immediately: the flatly inserted hot water bottle disappears under clothing, while an overfilled one bulges.

The cap is the wear part

A hot water bottle usually leaks at the cap. The seal inside hardens over time, while the material itself lasts longer. Screw the cap on tightly, but not with force, and check it occasionally. If it looks brittle or no longer grips properly, replace it. We offer the replacement cap separately.

Otherwise: hot water bottles are not heirlooms. After a few years of regular use, a new one is due.

Cleaning and storage

Wash the cover by hand and let it air dry. Do not tumble dry, iron, or dry clean. Simply remove the hot water bottle for this.

To store, empty the bottle, store it open in a dry place, and do not place anything heavy on it. Otherwise, creases will remain in the material.

When we use it

More often than I initially thought. In the home office on cold mornings when the heating hasn't quite caught up yet. In the evening on the sofa. On long car journeys. And in winter in poorly insulated old buildings where it's simply impossible to get warm in the evening.

The difference to the classic: with the belt, the warmth stays where you put it, even when you get up. You go to the kitchen, get a drink, sit back down, and don't have to readjust anything.
